EAST AFRICA FAMINE CRISIS 2012

EMERGENCY APPEAL

In the Horn of Africa frequent drought episodes occur, we are now facing one of the worst to date.  It is a vicious circle of hunger, ill-health and poverty. Lack of water and population displacements, which result in precarious sanitation, further increase the risk of communicable diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections and measles. Outbreaks of acute watery diarrhoea and measles have already been reported in Djibouti and Ethiopia. The effects of the drought are also aggravated by weak health care systems, with limited human resources and medical supplies and low immunization coverage. In Somalia, child health is among the worst in the world. In the first half of 2011, at least three Somali children died of malnutrition every day. In the current 2012 crisis, the main objective is to avoid excess death from malnutrition and infectious diseases among the most severely affected communities in these countries affected by the drought. has been described as the worst drought in over half a century. Around 4 million children in Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance as well as the adult population. In Somalia, where the drought is compounded by the escalating conflict, thousands of people have fled to the neighbouring countries of Ethiopia and Kenya, where many of them are living in overcrowded camps without adequate health care, clean water or proper sanitation. Malnutrition rates are soaring, and the low vaccination coverage of children is leading to concerns over possible communicable disease outbreaks.
WorldAid’s relief mission to Ethiopia will concentrate on a working at grassroots level  directly at camps with the effected children. We will be setting-up a temporary camp carrying out health assessments,  vaccinating, which will cover polio and measles and include vitamin A supplements and deworming tablets and furthermore trying to accommodate the need of each camp area, that consisting of providing basics such as food and clean drinking water. We will as always, provide you with a fully comprehensive day to day report on our return from Ethiopia, detailing the mission.

So PLEASE donate what ever you can afford to help us with our appeal.

Thank You for your support !!!

Update on Construction project in village Tatu near Gilgit : This is currently being delayed due to continuous landslide on-route to the village Tatu, as this is the only route from the outside world to the village via the narrow mountainous single road, so there is no other way of getting the building materials to this village. The small bridge which you can view below has just been being built to resolve this issue and was opened for use on the 27th July 2011. So we can now commence our construction project in village Tatu.

Project Completion Flood Mission Pakistan ... WorldAid are planning a follow-up mission ASAP, on completion of the construction projects that were commenced after our research/survey and emergency food-drop, during "Mission Pakistan 2010". This mission has been re-scheduled due to the construction projects being incomplete due to the severe weather conditions in these regions that have delayed work and also due to infastructure problems such as the Tatu bridge being constructed. We look forward to supplying you with a follow-up comprehensive report of our mission on our return...... please stay posted for more details …..
