Pakistan Emergency Mission - October 2005

BRIEF OF WHAT HAPPENED

On the 8th October at 08.42am, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, struck the Kashmir region. The earthquake killed more than 73,000 people mostly from Kashmir and has left approximately 2.5 million homeless, and an estimated four million people are in need of healthcare. Emergency priorities are to deliver temporary shelter, food, medication to populations living in remote areas at high elevations. Furthermore to get the seriously injured casualties to travel to city hospitals, o receive the treatment they require desperately.

WHAT DID WORLDAID DO TO SUPPORT THE DISASTER VICTIMS?

  • launched emergency appeal 9th October 2005 at 1300 hours

  • by the 23rd October we managed to raise funds totally £81,000

  • made arrangements to travel out to disaster zone on 27th oct

  • by the 27th oct funds increased to £85,000

  • a delegation of eight volunteers (at there own expense) departed on the 27th oct at 11.00 am, headed by Mr Ali, flew from Manchester international airport, arrived following day at Islamabad at 7am

  • started networking with government officials immediately, to find out the update of the situation, also team members out in the field in Bagh camp to find out what exactly is required

  • after extensive research, we provided steel sheeting for temporary housing shelters in the following regions : Bagh village of Nica Nara, Balakot, Battal & Elahi in Mansehra, Muzaffrabaad.

  • food drops up in mountains of Bagh to villages : Southern Gali, Surrol, Bani Pasari

  • emergency medication supplied to Al-Shafa hospital Rawalpindi & Melody Centre for Spinal Injuries Islamabad

  • initiated and set-up three temporary schools in Bagh, in Surrol & Southern Gali & Bani Pasari
